HOUSE REPORTS (BOYS)
Cricket.
Congratulations, Athenians, on retaining the Cricket Cup. Both
the Senior and Junior teams did very well, but it was the juniors' record that
put us on the top. The Juniors were unbeaten winning two and drawing one and
the players who made the largest contributions to this record were Newman, the
Captain, and Williams for their batting, Brown for his bowling and England and
Baines for their fielding. Newman achieved the glory of not being out in any
of the matches. For him this season has been a successful one, since he has
played in two representative games for Devon.
The Seniors, though not doing so well, brought off the surprise
of the season in beating the Corinthians by nine wickets. This occurred mainly
through the unbeaten innings of Butcher and Goddard, who also batted well in
the other matches. Cannon, Hallett and Butcher all bowled well, and Hallett
got a hat trick in the match against the Trojans. All these bowlers were served
well by the steady wicket keeping of Lavis. For both teams the future appears
to be auspicious, and, I think, we stand a good chance of retaining the cup.
The following boys represented the House in the matches:
JUNIOR - Williams, Newrnan, England, Plant, West, Baines, Burrows,
Clarke, Brown, Watson, Niklaus (ii), Edwards.
SENIOR - Skinner, Searle, Butcher, Runnalls, Wood, Cannon,
Goddard, Hallett, Hancock, Lavis, Witts, Newman, Williams, Abbott, Soper.
Athletics.
Although the House did not win the Athletics Shield, we did
very well under the circumstances, and, in fact, better than had been expected.
In the Junior section both Crowe and England did very well in the sprints, and
the latter easily won the Discus. However, the Intermediates were most
successful from the point of view of winning points. Hallett did well in
winning both the mile and the discus, and Hancock ran well in the 880 and 440,
running second in both. In the Seniors, Witts seemed to be the mainstay and
did well all round, especially in the shot, where he set up a new record.
Therefore, on the whole, it can be said that the Summer term
of 1955 was comparatively successful, and I should like to wish the House even
more success in the future.
Finally, I wish to thank, on behalf of the House, our
Housemaster, Mr. Driver, who has taken an active part in the running of the
House.
G. A. RUNNALLS (House Capt.)
CORINTHIAN
HOUSE
Cricket.
For Corinthians this was a very disappointing term indeed.
Only 4 points were gained from the 12 possible, 3 of these by the Juniors, and
consequently the House finished last in the House Championship.
Of the Senior matches, the one against the Trojans was drawn
and the others lost, but that against the Spartans might easily have been won
when only 7 runs were needed to win with 4 wickets to fall. Smith and
Vinnicombe batted well against the Trojans and also did most of the bowling.
All the Junior matches were drawn and in two of these an earlier
declaration might have brought a win. Bannister, Warren and Mascall were the
main run-getters and the last two also bowled well.
The Senior Xl. was chosen from: Cole, Smith, Lethbridge,
Vinnicombe, Baker, Thomas (i), Sage, Greenaway, Tilbury, Hillier (i), Gibson
(i) and Brading.
The Junior Xl. from: Mascall, Bannister, Kite, Warren,
Anniss (Capt.), Lucas, Gibson (ii), Thomas (3b), Cowd, Thomas (ii) and Fulls.
Athletics.
Hard luck, Corinthians! After holding the Athletics Shield for
two years we have lost it to the Spartans.
Outstanding among the Seniors was Thomas (i), who set up a
new record of 106ft. 8in. in the Senior discus, beating the old record by 12ft.
7in, a very fine throw indeed. The high jump was won by Pym and he did well not
to have a failure until he reached 4ft. 10in., the winning height. Baker did
well in the long jump and mile and West in the javelin and mile.
For the Intermediates, Warren ran very well, winning the 880
very easily and the 440, and Hawkins did well to win the 80 yds. hurdles.
Bastin came 2nd in the mile and the relay team also gained a 2nd place.
Lucas was outstanding in the Juniors, his time of 11.6 secs.
for the 70 yds. hurdles knocked 2.1 secs. off the old record. Fulls jumped well
to win the high jump and Thomas (ii) was 2nd in the long jump and javelin.
Although there were only two wins many of the boys were running against older
opponents and should do better next year if still juniors.
Lastly, I must thank Mr. Cooksley for the time he has put in
and the help he has given to the House in the past term.
J. COLE.
This term we say goodbye to
our House Captain, John Cole, who has been the major contributor to Corinthian
successes in recent years in all branches
of our sporting activities. We shall remember
his keenness and sportsmanship as examples for us all, and wish him well on
entering university in October.
J.C.
Cricket.
Well done, the Seniors! At last we've shown the Juniors how
to play cricket. Thanks to the (almost unbelievable) unbeaten record of the
Seniors, the House gained equal first place in the combined Senior and Junior
table.
SENIORS.
v. Athenians - Won by 8 wickets. Athenians 30 runs (Ellis 8
for 6). Spartans 33 for 2 wickets (Shute 16 n.o.)
v.
Trojans - Won by 1 run. Trojans 55 (Taylor 3 29), (Ellis 6 25).Spartans 56.
(Guest 13).
v.
Corinthians - Won by 1 run. Corinthians 68 (Taylor 6 23, Ellis 3 32).Spartans
69 (Bridgewood 10, Griffiths 10).
The last two matches proved very worrying to me, as may be
guessed from the scores, and it was only through the unfailing team spirit and
keen fielding that we pulled through to win. Thank you all, Seniors, for your
support. Thanks especially to Davies, who kept wicket well, and to Wiggins, who
makes up for his small stature by his pluck; seeing him hit fours was a
pleasure. I could say something good of each individual, so please don't take
offence if you are not mentioned by name. You all did well.
JUNIORS.
The Juniors only managed to draw one match, but though their
cricket was not brilliant their team spirit was good, and that goes a long way.
Thank you, everyone who represented the Juniors, and especially Otter, who
tried hard as Captain and also sportingly played for the Seniors once.
Athletics.
Here I can truly say, "Thank you, everyone”. The fact
that the House regained the shield, which it last held in 1952, shows again
the ever-prominent Spartan team spirit. Many boys who raced knew they hadn't
a chance, but this did not keep them from giving of their best.
Special praise must be given to the wonderful running of Luxon
in the mile and 880. Avery also ran very well, and Luggar (Intermediate) did
well in field events. Several Juniors also did well and team spirit was prominent
as revealed by the fact that all the three team-relay races were won by the
Spartans.
I should like to end by saying that I'm very proud and
honoured to be a Spartan, and I hope newcomers to the Spartans next term will
have as happy a five years as I did in the finest House out.
I would like to thank Mike Shute personally for being a splendid
Vice-Captain, and on behalf of the House I thank Mr. Andrews for the unfailing
interest and constant hard work he has put in, ensuring our position as "
top dogs." Thanks also to Mr. Gibson, our new Assistant Housemaster.
Long live the Spartans!
R. J. ELLIS (Capt.)
Cricket.
We have not done very well this term, Trojans, and we must
"buck up our ideas" if we intend to do any better in the future.
The Seniors only won one of their matches; of the other two,
one was drawn and the other was lost. I am sure the last two results could have
been more in our favour if we had concentrated more on the game.
Jones, Marlow and Hutchison were the mainstay of the team
and did most of the bowling and batting, and what success we had can be
attributed to them.
The same comments apply to the Juniors also, whose results
were similar to those of the Seniors. Squire and Stuart did most of the hard
work for the Juniors and are to be congratulated. Squire deserves special
mention because of his great innings of 58 in one of the matches.
We were third in the championship this term, Trojans, but we
can and must do better than this. I hope to see you at the top next season.
Athletics.
As usual, we did not fare very well in the Athletics
Championship again. This time we were last; but one thing I must say in our
favour is that the points which we did gain were due to a real team effort. It
was not left to a few to do everything and I must say "Thank you" to
those boys who entered for certain events in which they obviously did not have
a hope of winning but did so just for the sake of gaining a point for the House
by finishing the race.
Well done, everybody, and thank you!
Some of the more outstanding of our athletes must be mentioned
for their performances; Marlow for his great effort in winning the 440 in near
record time Squire for his sprinting success in the Intermediate section and
Stuart for his all-round performance for the Juniors.
Well, this is my last report for the Trojans and I am sorry
to be leaving you. I'd like to say "Thank you" for the help and cooperation
of everybody in the House.
On
behalf of myself and all those Seniors who may be leaving I should like to wish
the House the best of luck for the future, and also to thank Mr. Collinge for
all he has done for the House and for the encouragement he has given to
everybody.

HOUSE REPORTS (GIRLS)
Tennis.
The standard of our tennis could be much improved if only
people would attend the practices. You cannot expect to do well if you do not
practise as a team. As a result of bad attendances we were placed third,
beating only the Trojans.
The team was:- 1st couple: V. Hart and E. Bland. 2nd couple:
B. Down and J. Kelly. 3rd couple: G. White and P. Gwynne.
V. Hart, a Third former, played an excellent game.
Results: Athenians
v. Corinthians. Lost 25 - 38.
v.
Spartans. Lost 20 - 43.
v.
Trojans. Won 40 - 23.
Rounders.
We must congratulate the Under 15 Rounders team on their
well-deserved victory. They were placed first, winning all their matches. The
team was chosen from: A. Jennings, N. Timewell (captain), P. Nickels, J.
Powell, E. Tyler, D. Morgan, R. Bevan, M. Brownjohn, R. Forsyth, and W.
Tregaskis.
Athletics.
We were unlucky on Sports Day in that L. Watson, our
outstanding Senior, was unable to compete. Our team tried hard but lacked
enthusiasm from the Seniors. We were placed fourth, with Spartans only five
points ahead. Special mention must be made of N. Timewell, who did well for the
Intermediates.
I am sure the House has missed Margaret, our captain. We
were sorry to hear she had a fall from her horse and would not be returning to
school. I am sure every one will join me in wishing her a speedy recovery.
Finally, on behalf of the House, I should like to thank Miss Bedford and Miss Ellis for their untiring help and interest in the House. Thanks also go to Miss Chaffe for organising the games.
E. A. BLAND (Vice-Capt.)
Please keep up regular attendance at House practices. There
was great improvement at the end of last term. Our sympathies to Margaret. We
wish her and all leavers the very best of success in the future.
M. B., V. E.
CORINTHIAN
HOUSE
Congratulations, Corinthians, on winning the Athletics
Shield. We have been rather more successful this term than last, and the
attendances at House practices have improved. I hope next year you will all try
even harder and win the tennis and rounders as well.
The tennis team did very well in winning all their matches
but were very unfortunate in losing to the Spartans by one game in the final
position. The team was:- 1st Couple: M. Marriott and H. Minor. 2nd Couple:
G. Lawes and S. Fahey. 3rd Couple: J. Wills and R. Shepherd.
Results :
v. Athenians Won 38 - 25.
v. Spartans Won 32 - 31.
v. Trojans Won 48 -
15.
The rounders team was not quite so successful, managing
only to win one out of their three matches and finishing third. The team was
chosen from the following:- J. Broady, E. Archer, A. Milverton, R. Hill, S.
Free (capt.), M. Howton, E. Whiddon, A. Hunkin, V. Lew.
Results :
v. Athenians Lost ˝ - 4.
v. Trojans Lost 1 - 5.
v. Spartans Won 3 - 1˝
All the results on Sports Day were very pleasing; everybody
tried hard and the whole House worked as a team. The relay teams ran very well
and gained first place in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior relay races.
Several of the juniors and Intermediates were outstanding and gained many
valuable points for the House. We must congratulate these people and hope that
they will do equally well in the future. Special mention must be made of A.
Hunkin, V. Tew, and H. Minor, who did well in both field and track events.
Finally I should like to thank Miss Tucker and Mrs. Williams
for all their help and hard work, and also Miss Chaffe for arranging the
matches.
MARGARET MARRIOTT (Capt.)
GILLIAN LAWES (Vice-Capt.)
We should like to thank Margaret for all the help she has
given with the House, especially in training the Juniors. We wish her happiness
and success in her chosen career.
E. M. TUCKER, E. M. WILLIAMS.
This term we have been very fortunate in having had fine weather
for most of our House practices. This fact, however, did not help in the
results of our rounders matches. The Juniors played very well but only managed
to come fourth.
The team was chosen from J. Walls (captain), J. Graves, B.
Jennison, P. Palmer, S. Robinson, W. Lambert, F. King, S. Hudson, J. Marks, P.
Thomas, V. Shute.
Results :
v. Athenians Lost 2˝ - 0.
v. Corinthians Lost 4 - 21.
v. Trojans Lost 3˝ - 3.
We concentrated rather more on our tennis this term and
finally came out top, beating the Corinthians by only one game.
Those who played were:- J. Soper, B. Pike, N. Carnell, Y. Blackburn,
A. Bolt, M. Haysom and P. Joyner.
Results :
v. Athenians Won 43 - 20.
v. Corinthians Lost 31 - 32.
v. Trojans Won 45 - 18.
On Sports Day our position was third; this is a big drop from the first place we have held for the past three years, and we found ourselves struggling with the Athenians for third place.
B. Jennison must be mentioned in
particular for her outstanding achievements. Barbara gained for us four first
places in Junior events, and put up a very good performance.
This year the Spartans have had
some bad luck all the way, but let us hope that we shall achieve some better
results next year.
The Juniors continue to be
extremely keen, but the Seniors are still very slack in attending House
practices.
We should like to give our thanks
to Miss Bardens and Miss Ash for the help and support they have given us
throughout the year, and to Miss Chaffe for arranging the tennis and rounders
matches.
Janet and I wish all Spartans the
very best of luck in the future.
B. PIKE (Captain).
J. SOPER (Vice Captain).
Our thanks
are due to Barbara and Janet for all the enthusiastic work they have done for
the House. All Spartans wish them every success in the careers they have
chosen.
P.E.B.
P.M.A.
Congratulations, Trojans, on
winning the Sports Shield and also the Hockey Championship Cup.
This year has been a very successful
one, for we gained the top position for both hockey and netball, and were
second for rounders. The tennis position was fourth, which I hope will be
improved.
The Juniors have attended all
their practices regularly and because of their keenness have obtained very good
results, which I hope will be maintained. The rounders team was as follows: S.
Lethbridge, J. Crowsley, B. Hann, D. Mears, B. Baker, M. Blizzard, J. Dempster,
J. Jeffrey, and V. Stone.
Results :
v. Spartans Won 3˝ - 3.
v. Corinthians Won 5 - 1.
v. Athenians Lost
The tennis matches were all lost,
but perhaps next year there will be an improvement. It would help if the
Seniors would attend house practices more regularly. The tennis couples were :
1st Couple D. Lee and A. Mears.
2nd Couple C. Dempster and B.
Ellett.
3rd Couple J. Capper and W. jones.
J. Anderson also played.
Results :
v. Spartans Lost 45 - 18.
v. Corinthians Lost 48 - 15.
v. Athenians Lost 40 - 23.
We came second in Athletics,
gaining 72 points, and everyone who competed must be congratulated on doing so
well. Special mention must be made of Judith Crowsley and Sandra Lethbridge,
who both gained several first places, and who have also done well for us
throughout the year. Diana Lee, L. Harm and J. Jeffrey also deserve special
mention for their successes on Sports Day.
I hope that next year you will
support Diana well, and be as successful as you have been this year.
P. MAlR (Captain).
D. LEE (Vice-Captain).
The House Mistresses and all members
of the Trojan House join in thanking Pat Mair for her able leadership as House
Captain. Her quiet efficiency contributed largely to the success of the House.
We wish her every success in her career.
